A protein content database, http://www.proteincontent.org, with protein content data of the most common foods in North America is released. The database contains more than 7,000 food items commonly consumed by North Americans.
The database's user-friendly search interface allows users to query the database: (1) to find out the protein content of a particular food item, using a food item name, for example 'chicken', (2) to find out what food items contain a certain range of protein content in grams (g) of per 100 grams (g) of portion of food). For example, a user can query the database for foods that have a protein content between 50 - 100 (g/g), using '50 - 100'.
The protein content database is based on the protein data generated and/or compiled from various scientific literature by the USDA Nutrient Data Laboratory. The database is based on the USDA National Nutrient Database for Standard Reference, Release 23 (2010).
The database has a free public access policy and can be accessed here: http://www.proteincontent.org.
